Inculcating good habits in kids is a vital aspect of parenting. As a parent, I have recognised the significance of teaching my children basic hygiene practices from an early age. In this heartfelt blog, I will share my personal experiences in fostering healthy habits that protect their health and well-being. From washing hands before meals to instilling the importance of gargling, using hankies or wipes, and drinking lukewarm water, join me and explore the impact of these habits on my children's lives.
Washing Hands Before Meals

One of the fundamental habits we prioritise in our household is washing hands before meals. I vividly remember standing beside my little ones at the sink, guiding them through the process of proper hand washing. From demonstrating how to lather their hands with soap to rinsing thoroughly under warm running water, we made it a regular practice. Through repetition and gentle reminders, this habit has become ingrained in their daily routine. I am proud to witness their initiative in washing their hands without constant reminders, knowing they are taking important steps to protect their health.
Gargling with Water

Maintaining oral hygiene is crucial for overall health, and I introduced the habit of gargling with salt-water/ plain water on alternate nights to my children. Initially, they found it challenging, but with patience and encouragement, they gradually embraced it. To make it more enjoyable, we turned it into a fun activity, pretending to be gargling superheroes and making silly sounds. Over time, they began to understand the significance of keeping their mouths clean and the positive impact it has on their dental health. This habit has become an integral part of their oral hygiene routine.
Using Handkerchief or Wipes

Using a hanky or wipes is another habit we promote to prevent the spread of germs. We teach our children to cover their mouths and noses with a tissue or their elbow when coughing or sneezing. In our household, we practice using hankies or wipes to promote cleanliness throughout the day. I vividly recall demonstrating the proper technique and discussing the importance of this habit with my children. By providing them hankies I encourage them to use them to wipe their hands and faces whenever necessary. This habit not only promotes hygiene but also instills a sense of responsibility in them to take care of their personal cleanliness.
Drinking Lukewarm Water

Inspired by my own upbringing, I introduced the habit of drinking lukewarm water early in the morning to my children. Although they were initially hesitant, they witnessed the positive effects, such as improved digestion and increased hydration, and willingly embraced it. I would prepare a glass of lukewarm water for each of them and explain how it helps cleanse their system and prepares them for the day ahead. This habit has become a refreshing and healthy way to start their mornings.
In the end, i would say Inculcating good habits in kids requires patience, consistency, and leading by example. By practicing and emphasizing these habits myself, I have seen my children understand the importance of hygiene and adopt these practices as their own. From washing hands before meals to gaggling, using hankies or wipes, and drinking lukewarm water, these habits have become a part of their daily routines. Witnessing them take responsibility for their health and well-being is truly rewarding. I believe these habits will serve them well throughout their lives, fostering a foundation of good health and hygiene practices. Let us continue to nurture these habits in our children, ensuring a healthier future for them.
